wander- welcome to lock haven

Since visiting Pennsylvania, I have yet to find anyone who is familiar with the small town of Lock Haven. So, in the words of one of my favorite high school bands, Cute is What We Aim For… “I’m gunna make sure that I put this place on the map.”Web

Lock Haven was originally settled in the 1700’s, back then know as Fort Reed, and used a little logger community, stockaded to defend against local Indian attacks along the west bank of the Susquehanna River. Because of the amazing resources in the area, the small fort was eventually made into a small town, and because of the transportation means of the Pennsylvania Canal in 1834, many families we’re provided with a living.  This canal though, along with frequent flooding of the Susquehanna, and depletion of forest area, caused the logging era to end and other industries to take over.

One of those industries was that of the aircraft. On the old silk mill sites, Piper Aircraft Corporation started making small planes and thus making a huge impact on the small town’s economy. Eventually though, because of flood losses the company relocated to Florida in the 1980s. Throughout thee years Lock Haven has been privy to many different booms in industry, like most towns along the river, but as a community they have been able to adequately adapt time after time. The thing I personally loved most about Lock Haven, other than the river of course, was Lock Haven University or as some call it, The Haven. For it truly is a haven. We had the opportunity to stay on campus for a week while working an EFY session and I can honestly say the environment and the kids that came were of the most amazing I have ever got to work with. Just being there was conducive to the camaraderie we were trying to instill in the program in order for it to run smoothly. There most definitely a special spirit about that place.

I actually found a video on youtube that quite explains how I feel about The Haven:

And we may have made a video, while there, that explains how Too Little Too Late it is,

but it’s never too late to visit Lock Haven, so why not give it a go?
